Hits vs Page views

I've just started using weblog expert lite and am confused about what hits actually mean. Is a hit any instance where something is requested from a web page so a banner or an image so 587 hits might not be 587 views of a page it will be 587 items from that page were requested?

If that is the case, is there a more accurate figure to use for actual "page views"?

Hit is a request for any file (page, image, etc). However, number of hits shown in the Pages report includes only hits (requests) for pages, so you can use it as number of page views.
