What is the difference between the GeoIP data that can be downloaded through WLE website and a commercially provided one such as MaxMind's? Is one more comprehensive than the other? Are there sourced from different places? Is one more authorative? Is one more reliable?

We use the GeoLite Developer's Package that includes GeoLite databases, you can find more information on it at http://www.maxmind.com/app/builder. Unfortunately the only information we have on the databases is the one available at MaxMind's site, e.g. http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolite.

I recommend you to contact MaxMind for more information on differences between these databases.
